I was just so distracted writing this week, it was unbelievable. On top of starting a new job a couple of weeks back, I have to contend with loud siblings, I rarely get peace. I decided to replace their annoying distractions with better distractions, so it took watching four movies to get the chapter done. Well I watched the movies that were in the background while writing. It was hard, and took so long, but I got there. The films included Pixar's The Incredibles, MGM's The Wizard of Oz, Touchstone Picture's The Proposal, and Columbia Pictures's Charlie's Angels. A nice mix there. But on with the update.

Chapter 1 - Every Legend Has a Beginning - Completed (May 11, 2010)
Chapter 2 - The Night Softly Whispers - Completed (June 3, 2010)
Chapter 3 - A Nightmare on Meadow Falls - Completed (June 16, 2010)
Chapter 4 - Someone Is Always Watching - Completed (June 28, 2010)
Chapter 5 - Forbidden Descent - Completed (July 7, 2010)
Chapter 6 - Secrets and Betrayal - Completed (July 22, 2010)
Chapter 7 - The Writing on the Wall - Completed (July 29, 2010)
Chapter 8 - In This Home of Murder - Currently Working On

Deadline for Chapter 8 is next Sunday, August 8. I've just started my new job so I have been extremely busy with that, so it's hard finding time and energy to write these days. And also I had to swap names with chapter 6 and 7, just because I planned something in Chapter 6 that will actually happen in Chapter 7 so the name needed changing. I only finished it about 2 hours ago and posted it on the site, Authonomy.

Chapter 1 - Every Legend Has a Beginning - Completed (May 11, 2010)
Chapter 2 - The Night Softly Whispers - Completed (June 3, 2010)
Chapter 3 - A Nightmare on Meadow Falls - Completed (June 16, 2010)
Chapter 4 - Someone Is Always Watching - Completed (June 28, 2010)
Chapter 5 - Forbidden Descent - Completed (July 7, 2010)
Chapter 6 - Secrets and Betrayal - Completed (July 22, 2010)
Chapter 7 - The Writing on the Wall - Currently Working On

Also a quick update for Authonomy, my book has moved up a place to #3 on the Horror Weekly Chart, and also #10 for the Fantasy Chart. My book wasn't on the site for more than an hour when I began to get overwhelmed by how amazingly well people are taking it. There are charts on the site, like for each genre, and a category for each, like Weekly Charts, Monthly Charts, etc. And in over an hour, my book broke the top 10 in the Horror category for the Weekly Charts, by getting #9!

Ever since I have been monitoring my book on the site and I cannot be happier. Ever since, the book has now peaked at #4, and has charted on other charts too. You can only submit it for four genres (I chose Horror, Fantasy, Fiction and Young Adult for mine) so they'll only appear on them charts, and of course on All Genres. So I will post where my book has peaked as of July 21 2010.

Latest Books Charts:
(of the newest books on the site)

<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; I am really proud of my book and myself, I am really happy. I feel a lot more motivated to write. And I took a printscreen of my book charting #4 on the Weekly Horror Chart, which is probably my best achievement thus far:

Read the First 5 Chapters

Hey, quite recently (and I mean very recent, like less than half an hour ago), I created an account on a site called Authonomy, from Hyper Collins. On the site, thousands of people have uploaded chapter of their books so other people can comment and rate and even put it on their "bookshelf", and I wanted to give it a go.

Of course, I dread the reviews when I get them, in case they're bad hehe but I will always take constructive criticism on board and develop any problems the story has so it will be ready for when I send to an agent sometime in the near future.

The link to my book online is: http://authonomy.com/ViewBook.aspx?bookid=23856

If you have the chance to read I would love to hear any opinions. But vampires have no problems with Sookie's talent - she can't pick up much of anything from the undead. But there's only one vampire Sookie Stackhouse is involved with - at least voluntarily - right now, and that's Bill.

But recently, he's been a little distant - in another state distant. His sinister and sexy boss Eric has an idea where to find him, and next thing Sookie knows, she's off to Jackson, Mississippi, to mingle with the underworld at Club Dead. It's a dangerous little haunt where the elusive vampire society go to chill out and suck down some Type O - but when Sookie finally finds Bill, he's not only in trouble, but caught in an act of serious betrayal. Should she save him, or sharpen some stakes?

Club Dead. Hmm. I mean, I loved the first book. Loved the second book. But thought the third Southern Vampire Mystery novel wasn't as good as the first two. It was only good, but nothing more. I praise the ground Charlaine Harris walks on, but I definetly think this book is my least favourite of the ones I have read so far.

The characters are still intriguing, introducing Alcide and bringing the whole werewolves mythology to the front. I liked following Sookie to Jackson, but I couldn't help but feel a little bored with the overly-long chapters. The first two books had really long chapters too, but I enjoyed them more. There's nothing worse than reading a very long chapter and feeling a little bored, it makes you just want to stop half-way through. I hate stopping half-way through a chapter. Good job I didn't with this book.

I don't really think there's much I can say about the book. It had its moments, and I still wanted to read it all. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great neither. The plot wasn't the best, but Sookie made it bearable, still following her through her mind and loving every minute. Don't think it's a book I would read more than once.

Story - 3 out of 5 stars

Intrigue - 3 out of 5 stars

Characters - 4 out of 5 stars

Overall rating - 3 out of 5 stars

Book Review - "Living Dead in Dallas" by Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse likes living in Bon Temps, Louisiana, and she likes working as a cocktail waitress at Merlotte's. But she is having a streak of bad luck. First her co-worker is killed, and no one seems to care. Then she comes face-to-face with a beastly creature which gives her a painful and poisonous lashing. Enter the vampires, who graciously suck the poison from her veins (like the didn't enjoy it).

The point is: the vampires saved her life. So when one of the bloodsuckers asks for a favour, she obliges - and soon Sookie's in Dallas, using her telepathic skills to search for a missing vampire. She's supposed to interview cetain humans involved, but she makes one condition: the vampires must promise to behave, and let the humans go unharmed. But that's easier said than done, and all it takes is one delicious blonde and one small mistake for things to turn deadly.

The follow-up of one of my favourite books, Living Dead in Dallas is a worthy sequel. While I admit that I prefered Season 2 of True Blood, which is loosely based on this book, it doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the book any less. I mean the parts I loved most of Season 2 with the whole maenad turning the residents of Bon Temps crazy so they can summon her God, was my all-time favourite bits. But they're unfortunatly not included in the book, and the maenad takes a more backseat role in this novel.

I enjoy following Sookie everywhere, to hear her quirky thoughts like she can read everyone elses, is a pleasant treat. The storyline of the books is on par for book one with creativity, and I simply cannot fault any part of the book. Charlaine continues to amaze me with how she can write, and I read each page religiously.

While the intrigue was slightly down from book one, I still found myself thumbing through each page wanting to know what happens next. The cast of characters become more three-dimentional, and Sookie grows up a lot in the space of two books. Tara is also introduced in this book after being absent from book one, though Tara is an important character from the beginning of the show True Blood.

So I kind of preferred Book 1 over Season 1 of True Blood, but I preferred Season 2 over Book 2. I really shouldn't put them in the same boat, since they're supposed to be different things completely, but there's only so much Sookie can see in the books from her POV, and she had to go to Dallas! She's still kick-ass.

Story - 4 out of 5 stars

Intrigue - 3.5 out of 5 stars

Characters - 5 out of 5 stars

Overall rating - 4 out of 5 stars

Book Review - "Dead Until Dark" by Charlaine Harris

Sookie Stackhouse is a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. She's quiet, keeps herself to herself, and doesn't get out much. Not because she's not pretty. She is. It's just that, well, Sookie has this sort of 'disability'. She can read minds. And that doesn't make her too dateable. And then along comes Bill; he's tall, dark and handsome - and Sookie can't 'hear' a word he's thinking. He's exactly the type of guy she's been waiting for all her life.

But Bill has a disability of his own: he's a Vampire. Worse than that, he hangs with a seriously creepy crowd, with a reputation for trouble - of the murderous kind. And when one of Sookie's colleagues is killed, she begins to fear she'll be next...

The Sourthern Vampire Mysteries, written superbly by Charlaine Harris, is one of my inspirations behind my Urban Legends book, if not the main inspiration behind it. J.K.Rowling's Harry Potter series made me want to be a writer, but the Sourthern Vampire Mysteries made me want to write. I owe Charlaine Harris a lot. She has a superb and brilliant mind. She writes with intrigue and perfect comic timing. And the show "True Blood" is really quite amazing too.

The first book of the series, which so far might be my favourite of the collection, was a joy to read, I seriously didn't want to put it down. I kinda wanted to turn into a vampire myself so I wouldn't have to go to sleep when it was getting too late. It's been a good few months since I finished it, but the story still sticks with me. I love mysteries as much as the next person, but the character of Sookie Stackhouse brings this novel to the front.

While the books only really concentrate on the one character, Sookie herself, since it's all from her point-of-view, we don't really get that character development with the other characters as much. We learn loads about Bill though, which was extremely interesting, especially the way they meet, how Sookie saves HIM, instead of him saving her. She's no damsel-in-distress. In fact, she might be the best female fictional character of any book ever. She brings the fight with her, she doesn't run screaming, well, unless they have intent to kill, in which we would all run too.

Now I watched Season 1 of True Blood before reading the book, so I basically knew what was happening, what would happen, etc. Though it spoiled some surprises, I still thorougly enjoyed the book. Looking at it all through Sookie's eyes and mind make it a more enjoyable experience. It is very different from the show in the respect that the other characters don't get their own parts to play as frequently, but nonetheless, I loved the book.

While I'm only onto Book 4 right now, I have to say this book is my favourite of the series so far. Usually first books don't pull it off because they have so much to do with setting the series up, but Charlaine knows her stuff.

Story - 5 out of 5 stars

Intrigue - 4 out of 5 stars

Characters - 5 out of 5 stars

Overall rating - 4.5 out of 5 stars

Book Review - "The Power of Five: Raven's Gate" by Anthony Horowitz

When Matt Freeman gets into trouble with the police, he's sent to be fostered in Yorkshire. It's not long before he senses there's something wrong with his guardian: with the whole village. Then Matt learns about the Old Ones and begins to understand just how he is different. But no one will believe him; no one can help.

There is no proof. There is no logic. There is just the Gate.

Thought I would spice the blog up a bit with occasional book reviews. They won't be very long I promise, and I will admit that I've been falling behind on reading lately. The first book I'll review is the most recent book I finished, titled "Raven's Gate", book one of the Power of Five series, written by Anthony Horowitz. I actually started reading this book in 2007, and I got pretty far in it, but with moving and other personal developments going on, I put the book off and finished it only a few days ago.

I'll start by saying I absolutely love fantasy adventure books, or books that involve the supernatural in some way, shape or form. I bought Raven's Gate with the first three because I really liked the covers, hehe, I know, very vain reader. Because it's been so long since I began the book and got most the way through then stopped, I can barely remember what happened at the start and middle of the book, though I do remember the main jist of it.

I definetly remember the start, where Matt and his friend break into a warehouse to steal some DVDs, but he is caught. I wouldn't say the opening really grabbed you to be honest, but I wanted to read on, because the synopsis just makes it sound so darn good. I also remember the part where Matt first moves to the new town, and the book definetly got more interesting. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of the book, the dark setting, the creepy characters.

The last few chapters were really good. I mean, those are the chapters I read more recently so they're still in my mind, unlike the rest of the book. I can't make judgments that everyone will agree with, but Raven's Gate wasn't the sort of book that would keep you excited, or make you remember exactly what happened in it. I know I left a while to read the rest of it, so I was prone to forget, but what makes a great book is the ability to make people excited enough to remember it all.

I did enjoy the ending. And I am looking forward to reading the second one, "Evil Star", as it sounds like it may be better than the first. I can't fault Raven's Gate too much though, as it is a first novel of a series and they usually have to set up the whole thing so it has a lot of pressure. For the most part, Raven's Gate followed through on its promise of a sinister supernatural adventure. At other times, it was a little dull.

No disrespect to Anthony Horowitz, I absolutely love his work and think he's an amazing talented author who definetly knows how to write about almost anything. I gave Raven's Gate a chance and I don't regret it.

Story - 4 out of 5 stars

Intrigue - 2 out of 5 stars

Characters - 3 out of 5 stars

Overall rating - 3 out of 5 stars

Chapter Update (July 8, 2010)

Like the new 'chapter update' header? Hehe. I finished Chapter 5 last night, my deadline of July 7th worked out, so all my chapter have deadlines. I work better with deadlines I have discovered. It's a lot longer than Chapter 4, which only has 1,595 words, whereas Chapter 5 has 4,399.

Chapter 1 - Every Legend Has a Beginning - Completed (May 11, 2010)
Chapter 2 - The Night Softly Whispers - Completed (June 3, 2010)
Chapter 3 - A Nightmare on Meadow Falls - Completed (June 16, 2010)
Chapter 4 - Someone Is Always Watching - Completed (June 28, 2010)
Chapter 5 - Forbidden Descent - Completed (July 7, 2010)
Chapter 6 - The Writing on the Wall - Currently Working On

My deadline for Chapter 6 is July 18th, I would aim for July 14th, complete each chapter every Wednesday, but I'll be starting work on Saturday and I have no idea how busy I will be with that. It's quite a short chapter compared to the first three, but it's action-packed, which is a shame that it happens in chapter four since when I send to a literary agent for representation I will only be allowed to include the first three chapters :/

Chapter 5 - Forbidden Descent - Currently Working On

My deadline for Chapter 5 is July 7th, so I will be working tooth and nail to get parts done daily :) I also originally had 29 chapters planned for this book, then I cut it to 27, now I have cut it to 24. Stayed up to watch the new episode of Pretty Little Liars and decided to write while I waited for it, and wrote after watching it too. I hate when I fall behind on writing and I hope to keep a more stable resume with writing now, but I doubt that will happen. Anyways, here is the chapter update:

Chapter 1 - Every Legend Has a Beginning - Completed (May 11, 2010)
Chapter 2 - The Night Softly Whispers - Completed (June 3, 2010)
Chapter 3 - A Nightmare on Meadow Falls - Completed (June 16, 2010)

Chapter 4 - Someone Is Always Watching - Currently Working On

My deadline for Chapter 4 is going to be the end of June, so I want it done by June 30. Gonna try and complete three to four chapters a month now. With 27 planned chapters, that would take me to about Christmas time. Speaking of, I cannot wait until Christmas. Early, I know, but aaaahhhh Christmas :D

SpoilerTV Recap/Review - "Pretty Little Liars" 1.01

On June 3rd I became a recapper/reviewer for the popular website SpoilerTV, where I will be writing reviews and recaps for some of my favourite shows. Since it's the summer, not many of my favourite shows are airing, besides True Blood, which I love and starts this Sunday (June 13th). A new ABC Family show premiered last night, called Pretty Little Liars, which I've been pretty excited about, and I waited until about half 2 to watch it. I'm possibly the first person from the UK to see it, woohoo!

Anyway, I posted my recap and review here: http://www.spoilertv.com/2010/06/pretty-little-liars-episode-101-pilot.html

I commented on what I liked and what I didn't. Pretty Little Liars is based on the book series of the same name by Sara Shepard. I could only hope my book series could one day be converted into a television show of the same name :)

Writer's Block

Whenever I finish a chapter, I go into this state where I can't seem to want to write anymore. I hate when this happens, and it's called Writer's Block. It's a sneaky little state of mind that the more I think about I realize I must just be lazy. Truth is, it happens to everyone I hear, so what is the deeper meaning of Writer's Block?

I think it's when we run out of ideas creatively, or we have the ideas in our heads, but processing them down on paper seems like a daunting task. For aspiring writers like myself, it's worse because we don't have a deadline or anything to work to. We have the complete freedom, and even though we want to finish our novels so badly, it's just so hard.

Advice? Well I would definetly recommend planning the chapter down to a T, if you know exactly what is going to happen in the chapter - all the storylines, what happens with each character - then you should be fine. Find the words. What I like to do is plan each chapter as if they were episodes from a television show, that way I can see it more clearly and I feel more atune to write.

Another bit of advice is deprive yourself of your favourite food, or drink, or activity, and tell yourself you are not allowed to indulge unless you have written at least 1,000 or so words. This could work, especially if you have the self-control and you really want your favourites. I do this all the time, my favourite drink is orange lucozade, but I won't allow myself to have any until I get at least a page done.

Writer's Block is mainly when we don't know what to write about. So plan. Make yourself excited to write, because if you have to force yourself to write, then do you really want to be a writer?

Chapter Update (June 3, 2010)

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; On her blog, http://heyteenager.blogspot.com/, she posted a bit where you could send a part of your novel, and I did so, and she liked it. She said "Great and very spooky!"

I know it isn't much, but it's actually amazing for someone who has gone through what I am going through to comment on it. He is pretty proud of who he is, though he can be clumsy and a little stupid at times, but all the while loveable.

Tiffany Hawkins - is an attractive blonde who has the obvious rich girl look, though she has a big heart. She is mainly friends with those around her, but at times she has trouble holding her tongue as her outspoken attitude makes her pretty unpredictable.

Eric Watson - is the good-looking jock type whose mother owns the Cafe, but she went missing years before, something which Eric is still investigating. He cares about the people around him and has the main family issues a lot of people have. With his father dying, the Cafe would go straight to Eric.

Christina Mayer - too nice for her own good. She makes friends with Justin instantly and helps him out from time to time. She has a younger brother who she protects with her life, but when he is kidnapped from their home, Christina goes spiralling down off the wagon.

Carmen Stevens - likes to keep herself to herself, reckons her life should be kept secret even though she is going through hell. Though she returns home one night to find her family murdered, she is left to fend for herself and believes being independant is all she can count on.

There is a lot more to the characters, but these are very brief tidbits about them.

More Info on 'Urban Legends'

So the blog is looking rather nice me thinks, and I would like to share some more information about the Urban Legends book. Well, I am kind of planning more than one book, I have a total of 8 planned so far, I have all the names and everything for them. I don't know if I should post them, especially since they could change, but I guess I could post what Books 2 and 3 will be called.

Book 2 - Urban Legends: Hymn to the Devil
Book 3 - Urban Legends: Season of the Witch

So there they are, I pretty much like the titles for all the books so far, and I may go beyond a Book 8, my inspiration to write comes from the books that True Blood is based on, The Southern Vampire Mysteries. Charlene Harris has a lot of books in that series, and I myself am only onto Book 4 "Dead to the World", so I need to get cracking and finish it.

With 8 books though, I have a planned death for one of the main characters in one of the later books, maybe Book 8 if I plan on doing more than that. But I am unsure whether this character should actually die, so it's on the maybe pile. I have so much planned for the books, I simply cannot wait to share them all with the world :)

Urban Legends: In the Beginning

So to those who have no idea what the novel is about, I wrote a small synopsis which gives the general hint about the book.

Something deliciously evil has shattered the peace in Lakefield View and five young adults will fight for their endangered lives. Justin Rutherford begins his first job at The Pandora Cafe on the night a woman is murdered in her car, and soon him and his new work colleagues are thrown into a world of danger and mystery. Not only will the things that go bump in the night haunt them, but secrets from the past connect the new friends in ways they never realized, and soon they notice their past could be the death of them.

Doesn't sound like much right now, but I have so many storylines and whatnot involved in the novel, it will be jampacked with so much. It's more character driven than anything, but the characters are all different and unique, each intriguing and definetly not dull :).

Peace and love all
.

Welcome to Pandora Cafe

Hey all, this is my new blog. I know no one will know me yet but I am an aspiring author hoping to publish a novel I've been working on since February 3, 2008. Well, I've had the idea of this story since then, but I hadn't started writing until November 2009. Since, my novel has been through a re-write, and I am now in my second re-write. I only have the first chapter done right now, but I am working through the second chapter and I am really excited about my story, which I have called "Urban Legends: In the Beginning".

The name of the blog, "The Pandora Cafe", is from the place in the novel where the principal characters work, and I was stumped with other ideas, so don't fire me down for it hehe :P

I will post more soon about everything, hope everyone is well, peace and love :)
.
